India are the only team to remain unbeaten so far in the tournament and a win on Sunday will not only make them champions but also equal Australia’s all-time record of winning 11 World Cup matches without defeat.

This World Cup is all about the fearless cricket played by Rohit Sharma, the big runs scored by Virat Kohli and other batsmen, and the most dangerous bowling attack India has ever seen. While Kohli is on top in terms of run-scoring, Mohammed Shami has been the leading wicket-taker in the tournament.

Australia, who pull no punches and are known to up their game in important matches, will be looking to “silence the 1.3 lakh spectators” at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Their captain Pat Cummins said on Saturday, “…130,000 fans are going to be here supporting India. So it’s going to be amazing. They are playing really well, remaining undefeated in this tournament. But we know that we can provide them relief to the best of our ability. We have played them quite successfully over the years, so it’s all building up to a good final.

Rohit Sharma called it a “huge opportunity” for which the team is preparing. “This is the biggest moment of our career and it is important to remain calm because this is where you can execute your plans better. It’s not every day you get a chance to play a World Cup final. I have grown up watching 50-over World Cups so this will be the biggest opportunity for me.

Both sides have previous knockout history – they have met on two occasions. Australia moved towards its fifth title by defeating India in the 2015 World Cup semi-finals in Sydney. In 2011, Yuvraj Singh’s courageous half-century helped the home team eventually win the championship to defeat Australia in the quarter-finals in Ahmedabad.

The 2003 final in Johannesburg was the last time the teams faced each other in a championship match. Captain Ricky Ponting scored an unbeaten 140 off 121 balls as Australia posted 359–2 and won by 125 runs, but India collapsed to 234–9.

A fierce competition is expected in cricket on Sunday, so this event in itself is going to be a spectacle for the spectators. The famous Surya Kiran aerobatics team of the Indian Air Force is scheduled to conduct an air show before the game.

More than 6,000 security personnel will be deployed in Ahmedabad city, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles will be among the prominent personalities expected to attend.

Other dignitaries expected to attend the final include Union Home Minister Amit Shah, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, Singapore’s Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam, Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Chief Ministers of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya. CM Conrad Sangma.
