New Hampshire Key Vote: Trump and Haley’s Final Push on Tuesday

New Hampshire

Former US President Donald Trump and former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley are vying for the Republican nomination in the 2024 US presidential election. Polls show Trump in the lead, and the key New Hampshire primary will be held on Tuesday (January 23), which is widely regarded as Haley’s last chance to stop Trump.

On Sunday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced he was dropping out of the race and endorsing Trump, making the contest a one-on-one contest.

Haley held campaign events in Franklin and Salem, New Hampshire, on Monday (January 22) in a last-ditch effort to convince New Hampshire voters.

Haley said Trump was obsessed with personal vendettas and busy with his court cases, keeping him from focusing on the future.

“When you go out on Tuesday, will you decide, do you want more of the same or do you want something new?” Haley, 52, asked voters in Franklin.

Haley tried to appeal to independent voters. The New Hampshire primary has a higher share of independent voters, who typically choose more moderate candidates.

One independent voter, Don Padgett, told the media that he would support Haley if she were the Republican nominee, but Padgett had not yet decided whether to run in Tuesday’s primary.

“I think there’s a lot of people who haven’t made up their minds yet,” Padgett said. He also added that he would very much like to see a Trump-Haley debate, but it won’t happen.

Padgett, an Air Force veteran, said he wants a president who can keep America out of war, secure its borders, and get the economy back on track. “This country is in a mess right now,” he said.

“I’ve always supported Trump,” Tony Ferrantello, a 72-year-old retired architect from Keene, New Hampshire, told the media. He predicted Trump would win by a “landslide.” “His strengths are leadership and strength, and he basically thinks not of himself but of the country.”

Trump held a rally in Laconia on Monday night. Many Republicans stood in support of him, including his former opponents, U.S. Senators Tim Scott and Vivek Ramaswamy, and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.

“This is about a show of strength and showing that the Republican Party is united and ready to take on Joe Biden,” a member of the Trump campaign told the media.

Trump was impeached twice during his term and faced 91 additional criminal charges. Despite this, he pleaded not guilty to each crime, claimed political persecution, and successfully imposed his far-right brand on the Republican Party.

Trump has been far ahead since entering the election, winning the Iowa primary on January 15. No candidate has ever lost the presidential nomination after winning the first two states’ primaries. A Trump victory in New Hampshire would almost certainly claim victory in the primary.

A Monmouth University poll released on Monday showed that 52% of voters would choose Trump, 34% would choose Haley, and 8% would choose DeSantis. DeSantis supporters were twice as likely as Haley to name Trump their second choice, according to the survey.

The Republican primaries have just begun, but the race among Republicans to become Trump’s partner has already begun. Trump’s defenders participated in high-profile rallies and took photos with supporters and campaign volunteers, which seemed to be an “audition.”
