The news of his demise has sent shockwaves across the entertainment industry, with numerous personalities taking to social media to express their grief and pay tribute to the beloved figure.
Born Purushottam Kocchar, Dheeraj Kumar’s five-decade-long journey in the entertainment industry began in 1965 as a finalist in a talent contest that also saw the likes of superstar Rajesh Khanna and filmmaker Subhash Ghai participate. While Khanna emerged as the winner, Kumar carved his own path to prominence, making his acting debut in the 1970 film “Raaton Ka Raja.” He went on to impress audiences with his supporting roles in iconic Hindi films such as Manoj Kumar’s “Roti Kapada Aur Makaan” (1974), “Sargam” (1979), and “Kranti” (1981).
One of his most memorable performances came in the 1977 film “Swami,” where he was lauded for his perfect body language and mannerisms in the iconic song “Ka Karoon Sajani Aaye Na Balam,” soulfully sung by the legendary Gaana Gandharvan Yesudas, with music by Rajesh Roshan and lyrics by Amit Khanna. This song remains a testament to his understated yet impactful presence on screen.
Beyond his acting prowess in Hindi cinema, Dheeraj Kumar also made a significant mark in Punjabi films, starring in over 20 films between 1970 and 1984. However, it was in the realm of television production that he truly revolutionized the landscape. As the founder of Creative Eye, his production house became synonymous with groundbreaking mythological series. Shows like “Om Namah Shivay” and “Shree Ganesh” became household names, captivating audiences with their spiritual depth and compelling narratives. Doordarshan, in its tribute, acknowledged his pioneering role in giving “soul to mythological storytelling.” He also produced other popular shows like “Adalat” and “Kahan Gaye Woh Log.”
Tributes pouring in on social media platform “X” highlighted not just his professional achievements but also his personal qualities. Many remembered him as a “true gentleman,” “humble,” “passionate,” and a “genuinely beautiful soul” with a “gentle heart and childlike innocence.” Actor Raza Murad noted, “He earned fame as well as respect. He lived a good life and was a very simple and good person. He achieved his position by working honestly.” Television Producer Asit Kumar Modi expressed his shock, stating he had met Dheeraj Kumar just a week ago.
Inder Kochar, Dheeraj Kumar’s nephew, shared details of his final days, revealing that he was admitted to the hospital on Saturday due to chest congestion and had been unwell for a few days. “Things started to deteriorate very rapidly… we didn’t get much time,” he stated, adding that despite all efforts by the medical team, his chances of survival diminished by Sunday.
Dheeraj Kumar was also known for his philanthropic endeavors, with one post mentioning his promotion of “free healthcare to the people who can’t afford it.” This speaks volumes about his compassionate nature and commitment to societal well-being.
His last rites will be conducted today, Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at the Waghji Bhai Wadi crematorium in Mumbai, with visuals from his residence in Andheri West showing preparations for the funeral.
