India defeated Australia in first ODI |
India achieved a remarkable feat in the ranking history by defeating Australia and becoming the No. 1 ODI International team.
Following their win against Australia, India moved to the top of the MRF Tyers men’s ODI team rankings, indicating they are gearing up to host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2023.
After winning the first ODI, India (116 rating points) overtook Pakistan (115) to become the highest-rated team. Australia is still in third place but has widened the gap between them and the top two after falling two points to 111.
India is currently at the top position in every format after finishing first thanks to wins in Tests and T20Is.
India Secures Historic Rankings after first ODI win |
In the first ODI, India easily achieved this feat by defeating Australia by a margin of five wickets. The highlight of their bowling performance was Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul after stand-in captain KL Rahul decided to field first.
Responding, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad scored fifty each and made an opening partnership of 142 runs. Despite losing some early wickets, the hosts managed to win with Suryakumar Yadav and Rahul scoring over fifty.
India, Pakistan, and Australia are vying for the top spot in the ODI team rankings during the recently concluded Asia Cup and Australia’s ODI series against South Africa.
Despite missing the Asia Cup final, Pakistan retained its top ranking. During the Asia Cup and South Africa series, both India and Australia had chances to win the ODI championship but lost essential matches.
As a result of the defeat Australia no longer has a chance to enter the World Cup as the top team. If Australia wins the last two games, Pakistan can still win the championship.
India is still in the lead and a win in the ongoing series will ensure them that position ahead of the big match in their home country.
Having already achieved the No. 1 ranking in Test and T20 Internationals, India’s dominance has now extended to all formats of the game. Only once before in the history of men’s cricket has a team reached the top position in all forms. Earlier only South Africa had achieved this feat in August 2012.
India has shown incredible consistency in the longer format, and as a result, despite failing to cross the finish line once again, they reached their second consecutive World Test Championship final in June. With the exception of the series loss to South Africa in 2021-22, their recent record in bilateral series is almost perfect.
India reached the T20 World Cup semi-finals in T20 International matches in 2022. Since the T20 World Cup in 2021, they have lost just one series out of fourteen, making their recent performances in the bilateral T20I series even more impressive.
