Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), one of the most anticipated game releases in recent years, has been officially delayed. Initially slated for 2025, the game will now launch on May 26, 2026. The decision was announced by Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., the parent company of Rockstar Games, which cited the need for additional time to perfect the highly ambitious project.
Why the Delay?
According to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, the company fully supports Rockstar’s decision to ensure GTA 6 meets fan expectations. “We appreciate the excitement surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI and remain committed to delivering a groundbreaking experience,” he stated.
Rockstar Games echoed the sentiment in their own official announcement, expressing gratitude for the patience of their fanbase. “The enthusiasm for GTA VI has been humbling. We sincerely appreciate the support as we refine the game to meet your expectations,” their statement read.
A Tough Blow for the Company?
The delay has had an immediate financial impact, with Take-Two’s stock dropping by 10%, marking its sharpest decline in over two years. Despite this, industry analysts believe the setback will have little long-term consequence.
Michael Pachter, an expert from Wedbush Securities, reassured investors that GTA 6’s arrival would still be massively profitable, estimating a 50% profit margin upon release. He explained that while the delay might shift earnings, it won’t diminish the game’s overall success.
GTA: A Billion-Dollar Franchise
GTA remains the backbone of Take-Two’s success, with Grand Theft Auto V selling over 210 million copies since its release. It holds the record as the second-best-selling video game ever, trailing only Minecraft. With an estimated revenue of $9 billion, GTA V has set the bar high for its successor.
What to Expect from GTA 6
Rockstar has so far only released a teaser trailer, showcasing a Miami-inspired setting. Reports suggest two main protagonists, reportedly influenced by the infamous criminal duo Bonnie and Clyde. Additionally, Rockstar has promised to avoid previous controversies by steering clear of jokes at the expense of marginalized groups—a notable shift from past GTA titles.
The game has been in development since 2014, but major progress began after Red Dead Redemption II launched in 2018. Rockstar has since undergone leadership changes, adjusted workplace conditions, and endured a significant leak in 2022, which revealed early footage of GTA 6.
Looking Ahead
Despite this delay, Take-Two remains confident in its future, with upcoming titles like Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country helping to sustain excitement. Experts speculate that Rockstar might launch GTA 6’s online mode closer to the full game’s release, signalling a new approach.
