The Super Tuesday Showdown

U.S. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump each won in a series of party primaries held in 15 U.S. states and American Samoa on Tuesday (March 5). The overwhelming victory was a step forward for the two to face off for the second time.

Biden won 15 states that held Democratic primaries or caucuses, including Virginia, Texas, Minnesota, and Colorado, and only lost the caucus nomination election in the U.S. overseas territory of American Samoa. Trump won 14 games.

Biden has faced little opposition in the Democratic intraparty race, which is almost typical for an incumbent president. He looked ahead to the November election and warned that another Trump term would mean a period defined by “chaos, division, and darkness.”

“Today, millions of voters across the country made their voices heard and showed they are ready to fight back against Trump’s extreme plans to take the country backward,” Biden said in a statement.

Speaking to supporters in Florida, Trump said the United States had taken a “huge hit” over the past three years and criticized Biden’s handling of the economy and immigration.

The former president, who lost re-election in 2020, celebrated a series of victories for his party on Tuesday and called November’s national election “the most important day in the history of our country.”

“They call it Super Tuesday for a reason; it’s a big day,” Trump said.

Trump’s wins Tuesday included California, Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Texas.

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is Trump’s final challenger in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. She won Vermont’s primary on Tuesday. It’s Haley’s second win, following Sunday’s victory in the Washington, D.C., primary.

After a round of losses in January and February, Haley pledged to stick around until at least Super Tuesday. She argued to her supporters that Trump’s reelection would be damaging to the country.

“Today, in state after state, there are still a large number of Republican primary voters,” Haley spokesperson Olivia Perez-Cubas said in a statement late Tuesday. Voters have deep concerns about Donald Trump.”This is not the unity our party needs to succeed.”

More states will hold nominating elections in the coming weeks. Biden and Trump will seek to gain enough delegates to secure their party nominations at their respective national conventions. The Republican Party holds its national convention in July, and the Democratic Party in August.

Looming are the legal issues facing Trump. He faces four criminal indictments, including 91 charges, one of which is due to be heard in the next three weeks.

There are still eight months until the 2024 presidential election, and national polls show that Trump has a narrow lead over Biden.

But Biden will also be in the spotlight Thursday night when he delivers his annual State of the Union address before Congress and a national television audience.

He is expected to tout the progress the U.S. economy has made in his more than three years in office. That’s despite polls showing that many Americans don’t think he’s running the economy very well and often complain about rising prices.
