Powerful storms swept across the central United States on Saturday, leaving at least 20 people dead and hundreds injured.

Homes were destroyed in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, and tens of thousands of people lost power over the Memorial Day weekend.

The Cooke County, Texas, sheriff said a tornado struck a rural area near a local mobile home park, killing seven people, including two children: a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old.

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at a press conference Sunday that eight people died in the state. An emergency official said two of them died from conditions caused by the storm, including heart attacks and a loss of oxygen supply due to power outages.

Local officials said three people died in Kentucky and two in Mayes County, Oklahoma. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency for the state on Monday.

“Severe weather continues to move across the state, with numerous reports of wind damage and tornadoes,” he said on social media. “I have issued a state emergency order to ensure that affected communities have the resources they need to respond.”

Abbott said, “The hopes and dreams of families and small businesses in Texas have been crushed by storm after storm.”

Houston’s severe weather killed eight people in early May and was part of a series of deadly weather conditions that have caused damage across the country this month.

The severe weather is expected to move eastward before the end of this holiday weekend, with storms expected to hit Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Forecasters say extreme weather is expected to move into North Carolina and Virginia on Monday as well.
