The United States, along with the European Union and the United Kingdom, announced new sanctions against Iran in response to Tehran’s crackdown on domestic protesters.
U.S. State Department spokesman Price said Monday (Jan. 23, 2023) that the new sanctions involved 10 people, including Iran’s deputy minister of intelligence and some commanders of the Revolutionary Guard.
Price said the sanctions were imposed to hold Iranian authorities accountable for human rights.
“Today’s action is the latest in a number of sanctions measures taken in close consultation with allies and partners, targeting Iranian officials and entities associated with the Iranian authorities’ brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrators,” he said. ”
The sanctions announced Monday by the European Union target dozens of Iranian officials and organizations, including Iran’s Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, senior officials of Iran’s special police force, the Revolutionary Guard Corps, and several cybersecurity, software, and equipment companies.
Among the sanctions announced by the United Kingdom is Iran’s deputy attorney general. Britain’s Foreign Office said the officers used an unfair justice system to put protesters to death for political purposes.
