Ukraine Blocks Russian Drone Assault; Moscow Claims Civilian Shelling

Ukraine-Russia War

The Ukrainian military said on Monday (January 22) that it had defeated Russian drone attacks launched on Sunday night in many places across Ukraine. Officials in Moscow accused the Ukrainian army of launching a “vicious” attack on a Russian-occupied city in eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Air Force stated that its air defense forces shot down all eight drones launched by the Russian army over the Mykolayev, Kherson, and Dnipro oblasts.

In Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed that at least 27 people were killed when Ukraine attacked civilian facilities in a shelling of the city of Donetsk on Sunday.

Peskov also said on Monday that Russia was taking necessary measures following a suspected Ukrainian attack on a fuel export terminal in the Baltic Sea.

The Ukrainian military has not commented publicly on either attack.

Since Russia launched the war nearly two years ago, Russian drones and missiles have repeatedly attacked civilian facilities in Ukraine, killing thousands of Ukrainian civilians.

Since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the shelling of a market in Donetsk controlled by Russia was the most lethal attack. Russia claims it has annexed the Ukrainian territory, but an overwhelming majority of countries in the United Nations General Assembly condemned the annexation as illegal.

In response to media questions about the attack, United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement issued on Sunday that the Secretary-General strongly condemns all attacks against civilians and civilian facilities, including shelling in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk. “Attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure are prohibited by international humanitarian law, are unacceptable, and must stop immediately,” the statement said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not mention the attack in his nightly remarks but noted that Russia had shelled more than 100 cities, towns, and cities in nine Ukrainian states in just one day. villages, and the attack on Donetsk Oblast was “the most brutal.”

He also said, “Russia must feel and always remember that the aggressor always loses the most in aggression.”

Zelensky also pointed out that Russia will be held responsible for these terrorist acts. “Had it not been for Moscow’s decision to launch aggression and carry out these acts of terror, hundreds of thousands of people would still be alive today,” he said.

Russia’s second-largest natural gas producer, Novatek, said on Sunday it was suspending some operations at a supermassive Baltic fuel export terminal due to a fire caused by what Ukrainian media said was a drone attack.

Located in the Gulf of Finland, near the Estonian border, and about 170 kilometers west of St. Petersburg, the megaport of Ust-Luga ships oil and gas products to international markets.

Yuri Zapalatsky, head of the Kingisep District of Leningrad Region, where the port is located, said in a statement that the fire caused no casualties, but the local area has been put on high alert.
