Human Rights Day 2023: A Celebration of Universal Rights and Dignity

Unveiling the Roots: Human Rights Day History

Human Rights Day is not just a date on the calendar; it is a testament to our collective commitment to universal rights and freedoms. The origins of this pivotal day can be traced back to 1948, when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This groundbreaking document, consisting of 30 articles, laid down the foundation for safeguarding the inherent dignity and equal rights of every individual, regardless of gender, nationality, race, religion, or background.

The formal recognition and celebration of Human Rights Day commenced in 1950 with the adoption of resolution 423 (V) by the UN General Assembly. This resolution designated December 10 as an annual day of observance, a day to reflect on the principles enshrined in the UDHR and renew our commitment to upholding them.

75 Years Strong: Human Rights Day 2023

As we approach the 75th anniversary of Human Rights Day in 2023, the significance of this day resonates more than ever. The European Union, acknowledging the historical importance, has issued a special statement emphasizing the continued relevance of the UDHR. The document, they assert, remains as valid and crucial today as it was 75 years ago.

The UDHR, while not legally binding, has served as a source of inspiration for over 60 human rights instruments. It created an international framework that guides nations in the protection and promotion of human rights. The need for such a framework became apparent in the aftermath of World War II when the horrors of war underscored the urgency of a global commitment to human rights.

Significance Beyond Borders: The Essence of Human Rights

The aftermath of World War II brought to light the atrocities committed against humanity, emphasizing the necessity of a global commitment to human rights. The UDHR emerged as a beacon of hope and justice, asserting that human rights are not a privilege but a universal entitlement.

With its comprehensive articulation of fundamental rights and freedoms, the UDHR serves as a compass guiding nations toward meeting the basic needs of their citizens, be they of a socioeconomic or political nature. Human rights transcend borders and cultures; they are inherent to every individual, without distinction.

While substantial progress has been made in the 75 years since the adoption of the UDHR, challenges persist. Crises continue to multiply, with women, children, and vulnerable populations bearing the heaviest burden of the consequences of war and conflict. As we reflect on Human Rights Day, it is imperative to renew our commitment to addressing these challenges and ensuring that human rights are upheld for all.

Human Rights Day 2023 Theme: Consolidating and Sustaining Human Rights Culture

The theme for Human Rights Day 2023 is ‘Consolidating and Sustaining Human Rights Culture into the Future.’ This theme underscores the ongoing commitment to not only protect human rights but also to embed a culture that sustains these rights for future generations. It invites us to reflect on how we can collectively ensure that the principles outlined in the UDHR become an integral part of our societal fabric.

Human Rights Day in India

For the protection of human rights, the United Nations formed the Human Rights Council called UNHRC. It includes 47 UN member countries. India was elected to the UNSC for the sixth time in 2021. India will remain its member till 2024. Human rights have been included in the Indian Constitution. Provisions for this have been made in the fundamental rights themselves. From Articles 12 to 35, every citizen has been given 6 fundamental rights without any discrimination. These rights are binding on the state. If these are violated then citizens can take recourse to the court. At the same time, human rights have also been ensured in the Directive Principles of State Policy in Part 4 of the Constitution.

On December 10, 2023, at 10 am, the National Human Rights Commission in India will organize a special program at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, will be the Chief Guest, delivering an address to the audience. Dignitaries including NHRC Chairperson Justice Arun Mishra and representatives from diplomatic circles, civil society, academia, NGOs, and human rights defenders will be in attendance.

Human rights are not mere words on paper; they are universally applicable legal norms. They form the foundation of peace and pave the way toward a more just, equal, and inclusive society. As we celebrate this milestone, the European Union reaffirms its commitment to the UN Charter, standing together with the United Nations and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as all multilateral and regional organizations, in advancing the full realization of human rights worldwide.

In alignment with the objective of leaving no one behind, the EU also reaffirms its commitment to promoting a human rights-based approach to development cooperation. This approach ensures that human rights are at the forefront of efforts to achieve sustainable development, leaving a positive impact on the lives of individuals and communities around the globe.
